Spoiler-free synopsis
It's 1860, and Privates Andrew J. Loomis and Gary Flark are an embarrassment to the United States Army. Loomis is a high-strung bookworm, terrified of loud noises, dry air, and his father, a decorated general whose shadow he has never crawled out of. Flark is a prank-happy optimist whose chief military ambition is to find a girlfriend, followed closely by lunch.
When the pair take the fall for a fireworks prank they didn't pull, the tyrannical Colonel Blanders hands them a mission straight from the top. Travel to the uncharted West. Find the mythical Devils Tower. Bring back the secret weapon said to be hidden there, in time for the Army's next battle. Refuse, or fail, and they face court-martial and life in prison.
Their map is blank from the Mississippi onward. Their ride abandons them half a day from home. Between them and Devils Tower stand a thousand miles of wilderness, a fur trapper with boundary issues, a village of dart-blowing hermits, a posse called the Black Rock Boyz (with a z), and something very large and very hairy in the woods.
Along the way, the two of them will stumble into a series of discoveries that changed the world, none of which they were looking for and all of which they will get the credit for eventually. But when the journal documenting their accidental brilliance is stolen, the two worst soldiers in the Army will have to do something neither has managed before: act like heroes, or at least something close to it.

Short bio. Kit Green writes character-driven satirical historical fiction. Loomis & Flark: Legend of Devils Tower, the first in a three-book series, is his debut novel. When not writing silly stories, Kit enjoys swimming with ghosts, tinkering on his time machine, and trying to get his cats to listen to him. He lives on the South Shore of the Detroit River.
Long bio. Loomis & Flark: Legend of Devils Tower is the debut novel from Kit Green, and the first in the Loomis & Flark Tall-Tale Series. Specializing in character-driven satirical historical fiction, Kit blends humor with history and narrative depth, using the past not as a source to be respected but as a playground to be run through.
Kit is an adult with autism. Traditional work has always been trying for him: the noise, the small talk, the rules nobody writes down. Writing never was. On the page, he gets to set the rules, then hand them to two characters who ignore every one of them. Loomis, who needs everything in order, and Flark, who has never met an order he didn't wander off from, are, between them, a fair picture of how it feels to be Kit on any given Tuesday.
When not writing silly stories, Kit enjoys swimming with ghosts, tinkering on his time machine, and trying to get his cats to listen to him. He lives on the South Shore of the Detroit River with his partner Dana and their two cats, Mimi and Luna. Books 2 and 3 of the series, Journey to Gold Mountain and Invade Canada!, follow in 2027.
